Tear Gas Used by trumpty Against the People

Democracy for America Advocacy Fund

Tear gas has been banned on the world’s battlefields

for the last one hundred years -- first under the Geneva Protocol of 1925, and later reaffirmed in the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention. The reason? It’s a form of torture. Laid down like a blanket on an enemy, tear gas is relentless and devastating.

It inflicts immediate searing pain, causes chemical burns, blindness, and even death by suffocation.

Yet here at home, tear gas remains legal for use by law enforcement against civilians exercising their constitutional right to peaceably assemble.

And disturbingly, its use is selective.

No tear gas was deployed against the January 6 insurrectionists

-- an armed mob that stormed the Capitol, assaulted police officers, and openly threatened to execute Vice President Mike Pence and Speaker Nancy Pelosi. But it was deployed against anti-ICE protesters, where even local elected officials like Evanston, Illinois Mayor Daniel Bass were left gasping for air, unable to breathe or see.

If tear gas wasn’t deemed “necessary” against an armed insurrection that invaded the chambers of Congress seeking to overthrow the United States government, then what possible justification could there be for turning it on unarmed protesters demanding human rights?

The truth is clear: tear gas isn’t about keeping the peace. It’s about intimidation.

Tear gas punishes dissent. It escalates conflict rather than dispersing it. It can leave Americans physically harmed simply for exercising their First Amendment rights.

Some cities -- like Denver, Portland, and Seattle -- have moved to ban it. But this can’t be left to local patchwork solutions.

Congress must act now to ban the use of tear gas nationwide, so that no American risks chemical burns, blindness, or asphyxiation simply for standing up and speaking out, expressing our constitutional right.

MAGA Invades University; Threatens Students

Black Lives Matter

This week, Tennessee State University, an HBCU that has nurtured Black brilliance for more than a century, was invaded by a group calling itself

“Fearless Debates”. They weren’t there for dialogue.

They showed up uninvited, wearing MAGA hats

and waving signs that read “DEI should be illegal”

and “Deport all illegals now.”

This wasn’t free speech. It was targeted harassment. It was an attempt to provoke, disrupt, and intimidate Black students on sacred ground. They wanted to get a reaction out of those Black students, so that they can keep fueling racism across the country.

TSU students met hate with strength. They conducted themselves with dignity and respect. That resilience is a testament to the legacy HBCUs have carried forward since their founding in the face of exclusion and violence.

But here’s the truth: Black students should never have had to endure this in the first place.

What happened at TSU is not an isolated incident. It fits a broader pattern: gutting DEI programs, banning Black history curricula, and now direct intrusions into our campuses. There is a coordinated effort to roll back progress and silence Black voices.

That is why Black Lives Matter is demanding that:

  • University administrators, lawmakers, and community leaders strengthen security protocols at HBCUs
  • Investigate whether this intrusion is part of coordinated targeting of Black institutions
  • Provide immediate support to students who experienced harassment
  • Reaffirm their commitment to protecting Black spaces and Black futures

HBCUs are more than schools. They are the living legacy of Black resilience, the incubators of Black leadership, and the foundations of Black liberation. We will not allow extremists to intimidate, disrupt, or diminish them.

Ask Congress to Support the Tax Excessive CEO Pay Act

Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund

Greedy corporations and their CEOs have never had it so good. They’re price gouging consumers while CEOs are making 290 times that of their average worker.

To put this in context, the typical Starbucks worker would need to work 6,600 years to make what their CEO made last year―$95.8 million!

At the same time, Tesla’s board of directors is considering a nearly $1 trillion pay package to Elon Musk, who is already the richest man in the world.

That’s why Bernie Sanders and I have introduced the Tax Excessive CEO Pay Act to tax corporations that pay their top executives more than 50 times their average worker.

At a time when billionaire wealth in the U.S. has reached a record $7.6 trillion and when 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, this bill would put a constraint on excessive CEO pay packages and encourage corporations to raise workers’ wages.

Sixty-two percent of Americans are in favor of putting a cap on CEO pay, relative to worker pay. Even Pope Leo has endorsed reining in CEO pay:

If the Tax Excessive CEO Pay Act becomes law, and Tesla’s board approves Elon Musk’s nearly $1 trillion pay package, Tesla would owe up to $100 billion more in taxes over the next decade.

Support the Billionaires Income Tax Act

Americans for Tax Fairness

America’s billionaires have accumulated $7.6 trillion in wealth.

According to a new Americans for Tax Fairness report, more than half of it, $4.2 trillion, has never been taxed.[1]

Working families pay taxes on every paycheck, but the richest Americans grow their fortunes virtually tax-free. This is not a bug in the system; it is the system they built to serve themselves.

We are building a nationwide fight to turn the tide. In Congress, we are championing Senator Ron Wyden’s Billionaires Income Tax Act, which would finally tax wealth gains and raise $557 billion over the next decade.[2]

On the state level, we are mobilizing for a Millionaires’ Surtax modeled after the one seen in Massachusetts, where a 4% surtax on millionaires’ income raised nearly $3 billion in its first year.

Both efforts prove the same point, that the ultra-wealthy are not untouchable, and when they are finally required to contribute at the level they should, communities benefit.

That is why our fight is urgent. Billionaires are spending unlimited sums on lobbyists, dark money groups, and political operatives to protect their privileges. They are determined to preserve a system where their fortunes are shielded and working people carry the weight. Every time Congress or a governor stands down, billionaires win. Every time we organize and force action, working families win.

The billionaires will not back down quietly. They are mobilizing lobbyists, front groups, and propaganda campaigns to preserve their privileges. They want the public to believe taxing the rich will hurt the economy, when the evidence shows the opposite: surtaxes and taxes on wealth gains can fund schools, healthcare, and jobs while billionaires do just fine.

They want people divided and distracted, so their own hoarding of trillions goes unchallenged.

Their wealth has grown by 160% since the Trump-GOP tax law of 2017.

That law opened new loopholes for billionaires while hollowing out resources for schools, healthcare, and infrastructure. The top 15 billionaires alone, men like Elon Musk, now control over 30% of all billionaire wealth.

This is not a battle we can win with research alone. It will take organizing, advocacy, and public pressure. It will take millions of Americans standing together to demand tax justice.

trumpty Leaving Working Class Behind

The Worker's Circle

The Trump administration is doing everything in its power to force this partisan budget through. But here’s the problem: It leaves working-class families behind.

In addition to cutting roughly $1 trillion from Medicaid and neglecting to renew the enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits in the Big Brutal Bill, Trump and OMB Director Russell Vought, the architect of Project 2025, have canceled or blocked more than $410 billion in urgently needed funds:

  • $1 billion stripped from substance use and mental health treatment programs.

  • $250 million yanked from school-based mental health grants, harming over 200 programs in 30 states.

  • $500 million cut from the Emergency Food Assistance Program, leaving families hungry.

As we speak, health insurance companies are finalizing premium increases that will hit families starting January 1st, at the same time that cost of living is skyrocketing for so many people.

With the expiration of enhanced ACA premium tax credits, costs could spike by over 75% on average and in a dozen states, premiums will more than double. The Congressional Budget Office warns that up to 2.2 million people could lose coverage next year alone.

Make no mistake: This is a manufactured crisis. Speaker Mike Johnson has already adjourned the House until October 1st instead of working across the aisle. The Senate rejected the House’s partisan bill. We need to tackle these very real and pressing issues for working people now.

Portland police official says in court

A Portland Police Bureau assistant chief said in court recently that federal police were “instigating” some of the clashes between officers and protesters outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in South Portland.

Other records reveal police were aware of — and concerned about — potential excessive use of force by federal police as early as mid-June. Portland Mayor Keith Wilson recently called on the Department of Homeland Security to investigate federal officers’ use of force against nonviolent protesters captured on video and published by The Oregonian/OregonLive.

Trump’s REAL Economic Plan EXPOSED Hiding in PLAIN SIGHT

Max from ‪@UNFTR‬  unpacks Trump’s white nationalist agenda that was revealed through Project 2025 and is being implemented with stunning speed.

The seemingly banal figures behind the economic and political project remain mostly in the shadows while Trump throws everything at the media to keep us distracted.

In this longer piece for Meidas, Max details the origins of their plan and how their economic policies are designed to:

  • crush the American worker,
  • line the pockets of corporations and
  • provide cover for the more nefarious white nationalist ideology that undergirds this entire administration.

Support the Equal Tax Act!!!

 Progressive Caucus Action Fund

Big news: a bold new bill has just been introduced in Congress—and it could be a game-changer for economic fairness in America.

The Equal Tax Act is a major step toward fixing a tax system that currently gives the ultra-wealthy an unfair advantage. Right now, multi-millionaires and billionaires often pay lower tax rates than nurses, teachers, mechanics, and other working folks, simply because their income comes from investments, not wages. This bill would change that by making sure investment income and labor income are taxed the same way.

It's simple: if you work for a living, you shouldn't pay a higher tax rate than someone who lives off stock dividends.

This bill also closes some commonly-exploited tax loopholes the richest Americans use to pay less—but, importantly, the bill does not take away protections for family farms and small businesses.

Even if protests don’t hit 3.5%, the resistance can topple Trump

“most mass nonviolent movements that have succeeded have done so even without achieving 3.5% popular participation.” Certainly, turning out 3.5%—or 11.9 million Americans—would be a tremendous achievement in the effort to overcome MAGA authoritarian rule, but over 60% of movements that turned out 1% to 3.5% succeeded.

In the 2021 book, “Civil Resistance: What Everyone Needs to Know,” Chenoweth identifies four factors that successful movements share: mass participation that draws from “all walks of life”; shifts in “the loyalties of the regime’s supporters”; tactics other than demonstrations; and discipline/resilience in “the face of repression.”

The lesson from the first eight months of a corrupt, lawless, erratic, and dangerous federal regime is that the resistance must turn out in the largest numbers it can, demonstrate resilience in as many ways as it can, and show vibrancy in all the places it can. Collectively, Americans and state and local leaders must sustain democracy wherever they can until the nation as a whole dumps the incompetent, vicious, and autocratic MAGA regime.
