‘sustained attacks on civic freedoms’
put US on par with El Salvador and Kenya
On Wednesday, a new report released by the non-profit Civicus placed the US on its watchlist following “sustained attacks on civic freedoms” across the country, according to the group.
“The United States appears to be sliding deeper into the quicksands of authoritarianism. Peaceful protests are confronted with military force, critics are treated as criminals, journalists are targeted, and support for civil society and international cooperation have been cut back,” Mandeep Tiwana, Civicus’s secretary general, said in a statement.
“What they’re trying to do is actually defund critical news sources and deny American people the ability to receive truthful non-partisan reporting by pulling their funding,” Tiwana told the Guardian.

trumpty's Incarcerating People Who are Unhoused
‘Civil commitment’ means locking up people without housing
“Civil commitment”—rounding up people and locking them up—is Donald Trump’s answer to the nation’s homeless problem, as set out in another executive edict. You need not be a sociologist to understand that homelessness, which afflicts hundreds of thousands of people, results from multiple factors, including lack of affordable housing, rampant evictions, and insufficient access to drug addiction and mental health treatment. This regime and past GOP administrations that have slashed funding for housing, addiction treatment, and mental health have inarguably worsened the problem.
Rather than provide additional funding or support programs that do work (e.g., fund Medicaid anti-addiction programs, or support “housing first” programs to get people off the streets quickly and then provide social services), Trump’s decree seeks to bludgeon states and localities to criminalize homelessness, by fining or locking up people living on the streets without shelter. Such a harsh rationale only underscores that Trump prefers barbarism to responsible social policy with adequate funding.
The ACLU responded swiftly to Trump’s executive pronouncement. “Pushing people into locked institutions and forcing treatment won’t solve homelessness or support people with disabilities. The exact opposite is true—institutions are dangerous and deadly, and forced treatment doesn’t work,” a written statement declared. “We need safe, decent, and affordable housing as well as equal access to medical care and voluntary, community-based mental health and evidence-based substance use treatment from trusted providers.” Instead, Trump is sucking $1Trillion out of Medicaid, “the number one payer for addiction and mental health services.”
How Do We Get Out of This Mess?
How Do We Get Out of This Mess?
When we survive the Trump era, we can’t go back to the status quo. We need to build a future where our society and economy are fairer for everyone.
How to live a moral life in an age of bullies
How to live a moral life in an age of bullies
Throughout history, the central struggle of civilization has been against brutality by the powerful. Civilization is the opposite of brutality. A civil society doesn’t allow the strong to brutally treat the weak.
So how do we lead moral lives in this age of bullies?
We do everything we can to stop the brutality, to hold the powerful accountable, and to protect the vulnerable.
Living a moral life in an age of bullies requires collective action; it cannot be done alone. Each of us must organize and participate in a vast network of moral resistance.

What To Do If You Can't Protest
There is so much more to do!
As governments fail to respond to—or actively engineer—each crisis, ordinary people are finding bold and innovative ways to share resources and support the vulnerable.
Survival work, when done alongside social movement demands for transformative change, is called mutual aid.
This book is about mutual aid: why it is so important, what it looks like, and how to do it. It provides a grassroots theory of mutual aid, describes how mutual aid is a crucial part of powerful movements for social justice, and offers concrete tools for organizing, such as how to work in groups, how to foster a collective decision-making process, how to prevent and address conflict, and how to deal with burnout.

trump Stealing Elections NOW - Take Action!!!
Donald Trump’s Justice Department just issued a sweeping demand to states to turn over voter rolls, voting histories, private voter information, and grant physical access to voting machines.
With his MAGA loyalists embedded in state legislatures, secretaries of state offices, and local election boards, Trump is building a legal and procedural machine to control election certification, suppress voters, and overturn results. It’s a coordinated, authoritarian power grab to gain control over how votes are cast and counted ahead of the 2026 midterms.
They’re defunding election offices, criminalizing voter outreach, and laying the groundwork to discard ballots under fake fraud claims. Trump is counting on apathy, distraction, and delay. But we see him coming.
In 2020, Trump tried to bully his way to power by spreading lies, pressuring election officials, and inciting an insurrection. Now he’s using the DOJ itself to carry out his next act of sabotage.
That’s why we must push every state leader to act now. Refuse Trump’s demands.

Letters from an American, July 24
On Tuesday, Nicole Acevedo of NBC News reported that detainees at the detention center in the Florida Everglades spoke of
lack of food and medical treatment, and
On June 20, she reported, the U.S. was holding more than 56,000 people in detention centers, the highest number in U.S. history. Nearly 72% of those held had no criminal history.

56,816 People Disappeared by ICE
56,816 people are now being detained by ICE,
both in the United States and in El Salvador and other countries where there’s little or no control over the conditions in which they’re being detained.
Over 70 percent have not been convicted of any crime.
Many were abducted by ICE agents in plain clothes and wearing masks to prevent identification, from their places of work, court houses, or their homes and apartments.
Families have been broken up and family members “disappeared.”
We have no way of ensuring that they are being held in humanitarian conditions. Venezuela’s Attorney General has announced that Venezuelan migrants held in El Salvador recently returned to Venezuela suffered torture and abuse while imprisoned in CECOT.
Because there’s been no due process — no independent verification of who these people are or even that they have been in the United States illegally — it is entirely possible that some detainees are American citizens.
This story continues to worsen.
Stand Up; Speak Out
This week there are over 775 protests. Outside of national protest weeks like May Day or No Kings, we have never seen this many. Weekday protests are growing, as are weekend actions.
And there are signs that our work is making a difference; however, we cannot relent. We must continue to apply more pressure. More calls. More protests. More sit-ins. More dissent.
