What Happens If/When Trump Gives The Military Illegal Orders?
In Donald Trump's first term, he said to his Secretary of Defense, Mark Esper, "Can't we just shoot protestors in the legs?" Secretary Esper said his impression was that it was a question AND a suggestion.
With the militarization of the streets of America, first in California, soon coming to Florida, and undoubtedly elsewhere, the following issue will soon come into full focus: what happens if and when Trump start giving the military illegal orders.
In this Justice Matters One on One interview series, I discuss this topic with retired LTC and career Army JAG officer Geoffrey DeWeese. Geoff is the legal Director of The Orders Project, which is part of the National Institute of Military Justice, and an expert in the area of lawful versus unlawful military orders, and the duty of military members to disobey patently unlawful military orders.

We are living through a period of upheaval. In this world of uncertainty, one thing is clear: The need for coordinated, collective action is urgent.
Recently, the people at Convergence Magazine developed a very useful framework called Block and Build. Others in the solidarity economy movement have offered a similar framework called Resist and Build. Here I want to highlight a slightly modified framework, building on the work of john a. powell and other leaders, that we use at the Horizons Project: Block-Bridge-Build.
Adding the word “bridge” emphasizes that for broad-front organizing to be successful, we need the skills and relational infrastructure to work together across many lines of difference.

July 17 - Join Us for Good Trouble Lives On
It may seem like months ago, but on June 14, some 6 million of us protested against him — the largest civil demonstration in American history. It showed the power of the people. It gave many of us hope.
We must follow that extraordinary event by an even larger nationwide demonstration on July 17, Good Trouble Lives On Day.
On July 17, five years since the passing of Congressman John Lewis, communities across the country will take to the streets, courthouses, and community spaces to carry forward his fight for justice, voting rights, and dignity for all.
On July 17, we must DOUBLE the number of us who turned out June 14. Because it’s our country.
And we must also appear in town halls that any Republican senators and representatives are holding, to tell them we refuse to live in a dictatorship. And tell them that we’re going to make sure they aren’t reelected.
Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Fighting Back Authoritarian Breakthrough
What changed?
The masks are off. Trump, MAGA Republicans, and their billionaire donors have given up on even pretending to govern for the people and are solely looking to line their own pockets and consolidate power.
We’re in a period of what the experts call “authoritarian breakthrough” -- a short period where a would-be authoritarian (i.e. Trump) sprints to rapidly concentrate and consolidate their power while eroding the norms and institutions that could serve as checks on that power.
We’re witnessing this in real time through lawless executive orders, willful disregard for the courts, and vicious attacks on higher education, media, and state governments -- and that’s only the tip of the iceberg.
They are working to consolidate their power and bully everyone else -- businesses, media institutions, universities, law firms, and civil society -- into submission.
How do we fight back?
They want us to believe that power in America comes from the top down. That Trump can simply declare himself a dictator, and everyone has to fall in line. That he’ll inevitably win. But that’s a lie.
Power isn’t top-down -- it’s bottom-up.
Power flows up from the people; through the organizations, institutions, and communities that support the regime; and then to the regime itself. Think of it like a house -- the roof is the regime, the pillars holding up that roof are the organizations, and the foundation is the people.
To prevent a slide into authoritarianism, we have to take on the pillars that hold up the roof.
History and experts agree on one thing:
We CAN stop an authoritarian breakthrough.
No matter how much wanna-be dictators try to convince us otherwise, we have the power. But it is going to take all of us working together to get it done.
